Entry 3: Computer Mediated Communciation and ESL
Assalamualaikum and a very good day everyone. Today I am going to proceed with my third entry. I hope my writings can help and give a bit of something to all of you. This is may late post because I redo all my posts because I want to make better blog. In my previous class, Madam Azidatun taught me about computer mediated communication (CMC) and ESL.
First of all, I would like to give the definition of what is computer mediated communication. Computer mediated communication is a type of communication that use two or more electronic devices to communicate. For example, people use mobile phone to communicate with others via communication application such as Whatsapp, Gmail and Wechat.
Besides, CMC is also used in language learning process. For example, teachers use forum or specific group to give students notes and exercises. By using this forum, students and teacher can communicate instantly. Teacher also can give students soft copy materials or link for students to explore.
Next, I will talk about collaborative learning. Collaborative learning can be define as an educational approach that involves groups
of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or
create a product. Learning processed happened through active engagement among peers, either
face-to-face or online. This approach is much related to CMC because they still use the same application and gain the same thing.
However, CMC has its own disadvantage. I will briefly explain the advantages of CMC. Firstly, to adapt CMC in language learning process will take a lot of sacrifices especially on financial term. CMC is used on electronic appliances such as computers, laptops and smartphones. All these appliances will cost money and not all people can afford them. Furthermore, it is a type of informal learning because of the educator is not around with the students. Students may not pay their full attention to the lesson because they can easily browse other things and no one will know about them.
Last but not least, students may get too much information. Not all students have the same ability to grab as much information as they can. Some are fast and some are slow learner. By being the teacher is not there, it is a challenge to monitor the students understanding face to face.
As conclusion, CMC is suitable for these days because of the rising of techologies. However, there are still disadvantages that should be consider and be improve day by day to give the best quality of product.
